Types of LED Monitors

LED monitor is a type of next-generation LCD monitor. You might like to see LED vs LCD Monitor before continuing with this article to get a better idea. With the development in the display technology various types of LED monitors have emerged. Let us uncover the different kinds of LED monitors available in the market and their features.

Based on the backlighting techniques used, LED monitors can be divided into the following categories:

  1. Direct LED monitors
  2. Edge LED monitors
  3. RGB LED monitors

Direct LED or W-LED (White LED) monitor

In direct LED monitors also referred as WLED, the diodes are placed directly behind the liquid crystal display (LCD) in order to light up the screen. Each portion of the screen has its LED which can be in on or off state. This provides a good contrast ratio.

Disadvantage of direct LED is that they are expensive and this technology also makes the screen thicker and heavier compared to Edge LED monitor.

Edge LED monitor

Edge LED monitors are the most common types of LED monitors. In this type, the LEDs are placed around the monitor rim, from where light is made to diffuse behind the screen. A Light Guide Plate equalizes all the light around the display giving it an equal brightness balance across the entire display. Since LEDs are placed on the edge of LED monitors, they are lot slimmer than direct LED monitors.

The edge LED monitors can not provide as good contrast ratio as the direct LED but they are affordable. Also the black levels are bad as the black color sometimes looks like dark grey. A bad manufacturing technology can lead to the edges of the screen having more light than the centre of the screen.

RGB dynamic LED monitor

This type of LED monitor are similar to the direct LED monitors. The LEDs are placed behind the LCD TV or monitor screens but unlike direct LED monitors, the LEDs emits RGB(Red, Green, Blue) colored light instead of the white light. Since the diodes can produce colors, the color experience is quiet rich and accurate. This is the best type of LED monitor.

This is better than the other two types but also the most costliest. Also RGB LED is heavier than the other two.
